The susceptibility areas are based on the areas given in McCahon, 2013, Liquefaction Hazard in Timaru District (Environment Canterbury report R13/29), which were mainly based on 1:250,000 geological map units, with some groundwater and test pit information in urban areas.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">The boundaries of the susceptibility areas have been modified using 1:50,000 topographic maps and lidar where available (Timaru township area and the Canterbury Plains), and are accurate to 1:50,000 for most of the district and approximately 1:10,000 in Timaru township. In some areas, new polygons have been added to delineate Holocene or Pleistocene sediment as per the 1:250,000 geological map units, where these were previously shown as rock or hill soils in the 2013 dataset. This includes areas along Taitarakihi Creek and the heads of Waimataitai Valley and Saltwater Creek in Timaru township.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">The susceptibility areas have been renamed from the 2013 names to be consistent with Table 1.1 of the 2017 Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment guidance Planning and engineering guidance for potentially liquefaction-prone land. Fields have also been added providing suggested levels of geotechnical liquefaction investigations that should be undertaken in each area for different activities (subdivision, important infrastructure, and building consents) to determine the liquefaction hazard and appropriate mitigation measures, if required. These are also based on the 2017 MBIE guidance (Tables 3.6 and 3.7).</SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">This dataset has been reviewed by Ian McCahon, author of the 2013 liquefaction report.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN /></P><P><SPAN /></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

The area around Timaru township is accurate to a scale of approximately 1:10,000.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">The liquefaction susceptibility</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;"> </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">zones are based primarily on geological information with limited borehole information. Liquefaction is a complex phenomenon which depends on the intensity of ground shaking and the depth to groundwater at the time, among other things, and there is no guarantee that liquefaction will or will not occur in any particular zone during an earthquake. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;">The data cannot be used at an individual property level. Actual liquefaction potential at a particular site can only be determined through a site specific geotechnical investigation.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN /></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
